Mar 6 - Battling The Evil Blinky

One of the nice things about getting up earlier is that I get to see bits of the sunrise and the hot air balloons rising over the city.  Sure, the sunrise is constantly behind me, but I get to see bits of it when I'm stopped in traffic.  No matter how small a glimpse, it's still undeniably pretty.

Sunrise Reflected

It was a pretty good day today right up until I starting battling the evil blinky.  I got more done at work than I thought I would, a very rare occurrence.  My desk looks tidier and I now have a much better idea of what's on it and what I'm in for, and boy am I in for it!  There are a great many things to be sorted out and for now I'm just putting out spot fires, but it won't be long before I get into a groove and start sorting out the bigger stuff.
After work tonight I headed out to Collingwood to meet Mr Smart for an early dinner at Huxtaburger.  I'd been wanting to try it since their signature burger made the cover of Australian Gourmet Traveller (my food porn mag) in the January 2013 issue.  They have a very small menu, just six burgers, chips and drinks including a few different types of beer, but what they do they appear to do well.  I had the classic Huxtaburger and Mr Smart had the Theo which is basically a double-Huxtaburger with barbecue sauce.
Because we both finished relatively early today we were done with dinner by 6pm so I drove Mr Smart home and then headed home myself via Forest Hill.  When I left last week I forgot my lunch box full of condiments, my apple corer/slicer and my secret stash of interoffice envelopes which I collect from head office every time I'm in there.  I'm very fussy about the size and style of those envelopes so I only collect the ones I like.  There was no one in the office for me to visit, but the evening security guard was nice enough to escort me around to collect my things.
I got home and brought in laundry and hung more out.  I'm making great headway with this hot weather!  Only two loads to go.  And then I sat down to write the blog and my internet wasn't working.  Sometimes, due to running my modem through a router, the router interferes with the net connection.  Usually I just reset both and all is fine, but since Optus sent me a handy dandy new improved modem, I decided just to switch it over.  The new modem means I no longer need the router too which makes my space that little bit less cluttered.  So began the battle with the evil blinky.

Don't let his innocent flickering green lights fool you.. he's evil I tell you!

I managed to identify all my cables and bits and pieces, even the ones from my birthday network storage drive that Mr Smart gave me and set up for me.  I successfully disconnected the old modem and connected the new one.  I even dusted the top of the cabinet while I was back there.  I sat back down and turned everything on and... nothing.
I fiddled with network settings, I read the manual, I re-read the manual, I tried troubleshooting it in the Network and Sharing Centre of Windows 7, I tried changing the password, I tried connecting my phone to it which seemed to work but didn't really.  So after thirty minutes of trying everything I could, I called technical support.. and waited on hold for thirty minutes.
"Have you called previously to have the modem activated?" No, I hadn't, the bloody instruction booklet told me that if I was replacing an existing Optus modem that I shouldn't have to do that.  But at any rate, the ball was finally rolling.  The technical support officer said he would call me back in thirty minutes to check that everything had worked as that's how long the activation usually takes.
Forty-five minutes and no internet later, I rang back.  I got a different technical support officer of course, and about thirty seconds after he answered the call it connected on its own.  It was slow, so he set about optimizing and checking things.  He let me know that these newer modems actually take about an hour to activate and up to half a day to reach full speed as they have a lot of connections to make.  I have no idea how much of that is bull-twaddle but I expect Mr Smart and Earnest will both let me know.
At any rate, at least I had internet and my internal network seems to be successfully back up and running.  The technical support officer said he would ring me back tomorrow evening to check that everything was running to my liking.  We shall see if he does.  At any rate at least I still managed to get the blog done tonight!

  Today's food was:

  • Breakfast was mixed berries with Roaming Cow reduced fat Greek style yoghurt and slivered almonds.
  • Morning snack was a large yellow-flesh peach.
  • Lunch was a Mission Mediterranean Herb wrap with baby spinach, a small sliced truss tomato, half a Lebanese cucumber, half a smoked chicken breast (about 75g) and some Praise 99% fat free mayonnaise.  This was followed by a small banana.
  • Afternoon snack was a Royal Gala apple.
  • Dinner was a Huxtaburger and a small chipotle chips with a 330ml Coke Zero.

Tune in tomorrow for more thrilling laundry and modem related madness!  Also, I will be packing for my weekend away tomorrow.  I'm escaping the heat of Melbourne by heading up to Brisbane.  There is something totally wrong about that.
