Apr 30 - Another Month Down

I left work at about 8:00pm tonight, though that not as late as it might seem to some because I didn't start until 10:00am today and I did take a short dinner break.  I spent almost all of today working on reconciling one particular account code.  This code is supposed to have a balance of $0.00 at the end of each month... it's pretty bloody far from that right now.  I dumped all the transaction history into an Excel spreadsheet and I've been matching transactions off one by one as I spot the sets that do cancel out correctly.  Whatever is left will be what needs investigating and correcting.  It's not a hard process, but it is time consuming and occasionally mind-numbing.  It is unfortunately though, critical that it gets sorted out in the next six weeks.
I ventured out to Haigh's again at lunchtime to get another block of their dark chocolate with cardamom.  TwoWrongs put forward the theory that it would go well with whiskey.  It sounded like a theory that should be tested so since I couldn't pick a good whiskey to save myself I elected to be responsible for the chocolate procurement.  I also bought a bag of ten dark chocolate frogs to share with the guys at work.

  Today's food and exercise were:

  • Breakfast was Uncle Toby's creamy honey oats with Dairy Farmers Thick & Creamy orchard peaches and mango yoghurt.
  • Morning snack was a 350ml Preshafruit apple and lemon juice and a pluot.
  • Lunch was a 300g red Thai chicken soup with a toasted English muffin spread with one portion of The Laughing Cow cheese spread (17.5g), followed by a slightly unripe banana.
  • Afternoon snacks were a Haigh's dark chocolate frog and a green nashi pear, cored and sliced.
  • Dinner was a ready-made 500g chicken and leek risotto with a splash of white wine and parmesan.  It was ok but I don't think it deserved the name risotto.. savoury rice pudding perhaps.  It was good to have it on hand though so that I wasn't tempted to go for takeaway options.
  • Dessert was another Haigh's dark chocolate frog eaten simultaneously with a dried peach half.
  • Exercise was twenty minutes on the cross trainer at load 2.
Not much to tell today really.  Work was draining and now I'm going to enjoy the fact that I'm finished the blog before midnight andgo and read my book for a little while before sleep overwhelms me.  Goodnight all.

Apr 29 - Jess Needs To Stress Less

I had a dizzy spell on the train (not a vertigo one, a normal one) which saw me need to leave the train at South Yarra to sit down for a while before continuing on.  I had eaten breakfast and slept relatively well so I'm not sure what prompted this one.  There weren't any symptoms of illness for the remainder of the day either so I'll just have to monitor it and see.  I am going to try eating breakfast before showering and trying to get more sleep.
Time is such a precious commodity at the moment and I seem to have less and less of it.  At work things are plodding along but I never have enough time to devote myself wholly to any one task requiring that level of concentration.  At home, things are plodding along too.  I haven't run out of clean clothes so far and though the dishes definitely need doing, I will get to them, but nothing is getting decluttered in the way I would like.
I realised today, as April closes, that there are only six weeks now (or just under) until end of financial year at work.  This is a terrifying thought.  Things are improving, but slowly and the pressure will be on to have everything completed and reconciled by that date.  I'm just not entirely sure that it's possibly, in fact I'm pretty sure it isn't.
Worries aside, the day was not all bad and it finished nicely.  Mr Smart sent me a link to a special deal on at Salsa's.  Today only their Chica Chia burrito was only $5.00, that's a cheap and filling dinner.  It took me a while to find them because frankly I didn't realise there was a second food court at Melbourne Central, but I got there in the end.  I'm considering keeping a few dinners in the fridge at work for the time being.  I have a feeling there will be a few late nights in the next six weeks.
Oh well.. I think I just need to resolve to try not to worry about any of it.  I will do what I can and what I have to but I need to focus on doing things that are fun, relaxing and good for me.  To that end, I got on the cross trainer tonight.  I only did twenty minutes of Communitysizing, but it's better than doing nothing.  I need to remember that.

  Today's food and exercise were:

  • Breakfast was a small bowl of Dairy Farmer's Light & Creamy orchard peaches and mango yoghurt and a 45g Carman's apricot and almond muesli bar.
  • Morning snack was two sesame wheat crackers, a red plum and two dried peach halves.
  • Lunch was a 300g sweet potato and pumpkin skinny soup with a toasted English muffin spread with Devondale butter.
  • Afternoon snack was a green nashi pear, cored and sliced.
  • Dinner was a Salsa's Chica Chia burrito.  A chia seed tortilla filled with chicken, guacamole, chipotle sauce, lettuce and salsa fresca.  It was very yummy and filling, didn't feel fatty and was pleasantly spicy.

  • Exercise was twenty minutes on the cross trainer at load 2.
  • Post exercise snack was six plain cashews, a dried pear half and four Brazil nuts.
The evening passed in relative quiet, I got a load of laundry done (and nearly froze my fingers off in the process), but I did get to do one more fun thing for the day.  On the weekend, my wonderful Mr Smart gifted me four new maps for Ticket To Ride (a choo-choo-train game on Steam of which I'm rather fond).  Tonight he found time to play a few games with me.  I won the first two playing on the new Asia map, but he snatched victory from me in the third game on one of the three new American maps!
One of the loveliest things about playing games of any sort with Mr Smart, is knowing that he'll never 'let' me win.

Well it's midnight now chums, so much for getting more sleep!  Though maybe I'll do a late start at work tomorrow, the trains were hell today as it was!  Apparently some track works ran late so they cancelled half the bloody rush hour trains.  No idea how that works but there you have it.  Goodnight, sweet dreams and here's to a happy tomorrow.

Apr 28 - Movie Classics

Today Captain Cupcake and I had a date!  She arrived at my place at noon and we headed off to Chapel Street to grab lunch before our double-feature at The Astor.  We walked up and down Chapel Street, slightly overwhelmed by choice, looking for a suitable spot for lunch.  We eventually settled on a Thai place, Ghin Kopi, and we were rather happy with the whole experience.
I ordered the Thai Pork Burger with fries.  It was a yummy juicy pork pattie with, lettuce, tomato, and a delicious fresh pineapple chilli relish on a crispy toasted roll, the fries were really rather good too.  Service was quick and friendly and it wasn't pricey either.  We may need to return multiple times to check out different dishes.  They do breakfasts too!  After a quick and tasty lunch we headed up to the The Astor to check in for our movies!

The Astor is all about classics.  Sure they show current feature films too, but the most fun you can have is by going to see a classic or cult film.  It's all about the atmosphere.  Old-fashioned ticket stubs, no lining up if you buy prepaid tickets, old-fashioned candy bar with awesome choc tops and tasty popcorn, comfy old seats, personal announcements to turn off mobiles, the crowd of movie lovers clapping and cheering as the curtain opens, and all the little things that make a difference. It's fun, really fun.

We were seeing a double-feature matinee today of Labyrinth and Ghostbusters.  Yes, I've seen them both before, but not on the big screen!  For the duration of the two movies my snacks were, a medium popcorn, a spearmint-chocolate choc top and 155g bag of Maltesers.  We had an awesome time.  We got there early so no line for the bathrooms and no line for the candy bar!  Also, we got our pick of seats so we had a great view from the front row centre of the upper section of seating.  Best seats in the house in my opinion.

After the movies both finished, Captain Cupcake and I headed back to my place and watched a few episodes of Community while I furiously blogged away catching up on the weekend's events.  Eventually we got hungry and walked down to the Kebab Joint.  I didn't feel like a kebab myself so I decided to try their pide.  I had a spinach, ricotta and feta pide topped with sesame and nigella seeds.  Lovely end to a lovely day.

Captain Cupcake and I looked at my Astor calendar and picked out a few upcoming events we might be interested in: the Grease sing-along, Rocky Horror Picture Show (prizes for best costume!) and The Blues Brothers all made the shortlist.
Can't wait for the next time!!

PS:  Captain Cupcake also got me this awesome Lego art supply centre as a belated birthday present.  Thank you!

Apr 27 - More Movies!

What a beautiful day it was today!  Sun was shining, breeze was strong but not chilly.  I went and enjoyed the sun for a few minutes.  The dark long days have been a bit hard to handle of late so I've recommenced taking a Vitamin D supplement for the remainder of autumn and winter.  I had a late delicious autumnal breakfast (at lunchtime) of Uncle Toby's creamy honey oats with Dairy Farmer's Thick & Creamy orchard peach and mango yoghurt, followed by a small afternoon snack of four dried peach halves.

It was a slowish day.  I did some laundry today, started Friday's blog, but before long it was time to head to Mr Smart's for dinner and more movies!  Mr Smart wasn't feeling very well this week so I drove to his place via Lamb's in Northcote and picked us up a yummy dinner.  A tub of Gyros lamb for Mr Smart, and Moussaka for me!  I had Moussaka, a roast potato, some Greek salad (more than pictured) a few bits of Mr Smart's lamb and some tzatziki.  After dinner, Mr Smart made cups of green tea with lemon and we settled on the couch for movies!

I explained my intention to watch more movies I'd never seen before to Mr Smart, my intent to watch more movies I'd never seen before.  I suggested that I should at long last watch one of Mr Smart's favourite films, Memento.  There is not much I can say about it without spoiling it for people but it was definitely an amazing piece of cinema.  A unique idea and unique delivery.  Apparently Inception was done by the same people, but I have to say I infitely preferred Memento.  I would re-watch Memento.
Our second movie of the evening was a 3D animation special, ParaNorman.  Mr Smart has a 3D monitor which means wearing these lovely fashion accessories pictured here.  Completely dorky I know, but it's totally worth it to get to watch 3D in the comfort of a home space!  The movie was ok. I had wanted to see it for a while, I like animated features, but it was a fairly generic story.  Misunderstood boy saves world kind of thing.  I enjoyed it but it's not one I'd re-watch, not without my nephew or neices anyway!
My weekend movie madness continues Sunday but with old favourites!
Stay tuned to read all about it.

Apr 26 - Catching Up On Films

I have a lot of friends who raise their eyebrows every time I utter the phrase "I haven't seen it" in reference to a film that 'everybody' has seen.  The three main incredulots are Mr Smart, Earnest and TwoWrongs, film buffs all.  Time is one factor in why I've not seen everything of course, but another is that I'm more inclined to watch films as a social activity (especially ones I've not seen before) and there just isn't enough company around to get through the five thousand films I 'should' have seen.  It's not that I don't enjoy films for their sake alone, I just I tend to enjoy them more in company.
To that end, movie nights are a huge boon to me.  I enjoy the movies, I enjoy the company (and yes, ok - the snacky treats), but there is always the tendency just to re-watch much loved films.  So a decision has to be made to watch new films, and so it has been.  TwoWrongs and I resolved that when having a movie night we would always watch at least one film that one of us hadn't seen.  I expect that Mr Smart and Earnest will happily agree to that too, or at least to watching films that I haven't seen before.
So it was in that spirit that TwoWrongs and I selected films for watching this evening.  What hadn't I seen before?  Donnie Darko, a mysterious number from 2001 starring a young and very cute but also kind of creepy Jake Gyllenhaal.  We watched the director's cut (which everyone tells me is infinitely better and more cohesive a story) and I loved it.  A movie that walks the fine line between time travel, alternate dimensions and mental illness.  It was scary, moving, joyous and heart-breaking.  If you haven't seen it, put it on your lists too.  I'm ashamed to say, I've actually owned this on DVD, a special edition no less, for more than four years.  It was in fact a birthday present from Earnest!
What was next?  Something TwoWrongs hadn't seen of course!  Chicken Little, a 2005 Disney Animation production that was a little panned by critics at the time but I think is a greatly underrated animated film.  It's got a great sense of humour to it.
So what's on my current list for future viewings?  Let's see how many you can't believe I haven't seen.  Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds (actually anything Alfred Hitchcock other than Psycho!), Amelie, Annie Hall, Ben-Hur, Casablanca, Citizen Kane, A Clockwork Orange, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Die Hard, Dirty Harry, Gladiator, The Godfather, Gone With The Wind, The Graduate, It's A Wonderful Life,  The Karate Kid, Letters From Iwo Jima, My Neighbour Totoro, A Night at The Opera, Notting Hill, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Silver Linings Playbook, Some Like It Hot, Terminator 1 and 2 (I'm reliably informed that the rest are not worth the effort), Top Gun, and I'm sure there are thousands of others.  Until relatively recently that list also included Titanic and Inception (thanks to Mr Smart for taking care of both of those).

  Friday's food was:

  • Breakfast was a 45g Carman's Classic fruit muesli bar and a 45g Carman's Original fruit-free muesli bar.
  • Morning snack was a green nashi pear, cored and sliced.
  • Lunch was a 300g skinny mild Indian masala dahl with a toasted English muffin spread with Devondale butter.  After that I had a quarter of a plain sweet muffin and a quarter of an apple cinnamon muffin.
  • Afternoon snack was a red plum.
  • Friday night drinkies were a glass of orange juice, a quarter of a plain sweet muffin and a quarter of a chocolate choc-chip muffin.

  • Dinner was a bowl of 75g (dry weight) wholemeal pasta spirals with bacon, zucchini and parmesan sauce.  I forgot to take a picture!
  • Dessert was thirteen squares of Haigh's Dark Chocolate With Cardamom.  It's my favourite flavour of Haigh's chocolate block.  It is truly delicious.
So friends, relations and random internet persons, tell me your favourite movies?  What would you not believe I haven't seen?

Apr 25 - Anzac Day

It was nice to be able to wake up at Mr Smart's and not have to rush off, and a real luxury to be able to spend time together mid-week since having given up my fortnightly Friday off.  For a while after waking I just lay in bed listening to the sounds of the two Mr Smarts watching the Anzac Day ceremonies on the television in the lounge room and thinking about my departed grandparents, both in the armed forces during WWII.  Though the war killed neither, they still made sacrifices and though I don't believe in an afterlife, I still somehow hope that cosmically speaking, they are together now.
Mr Smart brought me in a coffee and I enjoyed it while I stayed snuggled under the covers and read my book a while longer while he wrote.  After sufficient quantities were written, the idea of brunch was mooted so we headed down High Street to The Old Fire Station Cafe.  We've been there a few times now but today was a lovely warm autumn day so we sat outside.  Even the outside of the place is decorated with old firey things.

For breakfast I had the savoury french toast with bacon and maple syrup and two hash browns.  It was delicious.  Their serves are quite generous and it's quite a friendly and relaxing place to sit and enjoy the morning.

We walked home again after a fine repast and continued on with blogging, reading and writing as well as watching some episodes of old school original series Star Trek.  It was fun to re-watch the oldies with Captain Kirk and his stilted dialogue delivery.  Eventually the next block of writing was completed and Mr Smart suggested we go for a walk to look at what we deem 'house porn', ie. looking at all the beautiful houses we like but could only afford if we won Tattslotto.
It was a beautiful day for a walk and we went up and down the streets of Preston wandering any which way we pleased.  We found a house with an Aussie grotesque, a couple of little easement paths that led to an unexpectedly large park and two houses, nay mansions... that we would have loved to have seen inside.  We saw front lawn replete with live lawn mowers, a beautiful Mosque and a group of birds that I laughed and referred to as 'the rat pack' (starlings, sparrows and pigeons all feeding together).

A group of people at work including me have tickets in tonight's Powerball.  Who knows.. I could be a millionaire as I sit here typing.  I know which house I'll be paying a visit to if I do suddenly find myself in the money.  This one!

Our walk ended up at Woolworths and we went in to grab a few things that Mr Smart needed.  I was sort of loosely planning to go home after our walk but he tempted me to stay with promises of homemade pizza.  It was delicious!  Mine was a Khobz Lite Flatbread spread with Leggos Pizza Sauce then topped with kangaroo salami, spinach leaves, mushrooms, blush tomatoes, black sliced olives, shredded ham, fresh buffalo mozzarella, pizza plus cheese (mozzarella, cheddar, parmesan blend) and a little diced bacon on top!  While it was cooking I also ate three green olives marinated in tequila, lime and chilli with the leftover fresh buffalo mozzarella and blush tomatoes.

We watched an episode of Supernatural while we ate which was fun, but inevitably it came time for me to head home and get ready for work tomorrow.  Despite Mr Smart's protestations, the simple fact remained that I had no clean clothes there to wear to work tomorrow, otherwise I might just have been convinced to stay.  At least there is only one more work day to go then it's the weekend!
I'm looking forward to this weekend.  I'm going to make dinner for Mr Smart and I on Saturday and on Sunday Captain Cupcake and I are going to the movies at The Astor!  They are showing a Labyrinth/Ghostbusters double-feature!  If you've taken tomorrow off work then enjoy your extra-long weekend you lucky sods, but if not, enjoy the fact that at least tomorrow is Friday!  Goodnight all.

Apr 24 - Nice And Rumi

On Monday, TwoWrongs was singing the praises of Koko Black chocolate blocks and though I was impressed with their desserts, I hadn't ever really rated them as a straight chocolatier before.  Perhaps my tastes are unrefind, perhaps I'm just snobby because I know they don't make their chocolate from scratch, but at any rate, I was left wanting to show him exactly why an Adelaide gal like myself would be a devoted Haigh's fan.  So it was with that in mind that I trundled down Swanston Street in my lunch break to the nearest Haigh's store and purchased one of my favourite Haigh's blocks from the very shelf pictured to share with him next time we catch up.

After that I headed down to Big W at QV to pick up some new lounge-about pants for winter.  I bought three pairs, black, dark grey and light grey, all in size 18 (I didn't even feel the need to try them on!).  They are lighter than track suit pants, more like yoga pants I suppose, but it does mean that I can chuck out my tatty old too big track suit pants.
As I headed up to the registers I passed a special stand of Cadbury Marvellous Creations.  It was on a really good special, half price at least, so I bought two blocks.  This may seem to be a step back but let me explain the difference between today, and the horrifying panic I felt on Saturday.  Today I was in the right frame of mind to buy chocolate and not eat it.  The two blocks I bought today will go into my black enclosed 'treat box' and I will not open them or eat them whole like I would have on Saturday.  They will go into the treat box for sharing with friends or guests, or to be gifted if the need arises.  Today I wasn't afraid of chocolate, I was in control.  That makes all the difference to me.
It was another rewarding day at work.  Two in a row!  I must be on a lucky streak.  I started on my centre accruals, part of which involved assessing the current position of our utility bill expenditure.  I'm pretty anal about that so it took me a while but it certainly proved worthwhile.  I found a serious error and took steps to correct it which will save us serious dollars.  It reminded me why I was 'worth it' in a work sense.
It was certainly not a hard to find error, but the simple fact is that not many people would've found it because they wouldn't have looked for it.  Me?  I have a definite need to understand.  So I poke and prod and look at history and break it down into its parts until I understand them all.  I can remember supplier numbers and GL codes off the top of my head because that's what I do.  I learn, I question everything, I'm not settled until I know my role inside and out and that's why I'm worth it.

And apparently they agree, because I got these today!

Mr Smart arrived at the office at about 5pm in time for us to head off to our dinner date.  I got to show him my office so he could see things like exactly how far I have to walk to use the photocopier or the bathroom or the kitchen.  It felt nice to be able to share something that although mundane, forms a big part of my life.  It was nice to know that he would now understand contextually when I described the office as 'long and thin'.  After the mini-tour it was off to Lygon Street to experience the delights of the Middle East!

  Today's food was:

  • Breakfast was a 45g Carman's apricot and almond muesli bar and a 45g Carmen's original fruit-free muesli bar.
  • Morning snack was a green nashi pear, cored and sliced.
  • Lunch was a plate of assorted sushi from the new Woolworths sushi kiosk at QV.  They had brought us up a platter to share at the office.  You've got to love a free lunch!
  • Afternoon snack was a red plum.
  • Dinner was at Rumi in Lygon Street.  We had the Rumi Classic Banquet which was perfect for sharing and contained many delightful morsels.
  • First course was labne, sigara boregi (cheese cigars), cucumber sticks with nigella seeds, taratoor (a bit like hummous but made with almonds instead of chickpeas), pickled vegetables and olives and Lebanese bread.
  • Second course was spiced school prawns with tahini, Persian meatballs and braised greens.  The school prawns were cooked whole and were delicious and crunchy in their little fried shells.
  • Third course was cabbage salad, quail 'joojeh' kebab and fried cauliflower.  This was the most amazing cauliflower, with pine nuts and spice and sultanas or maybe they were currants.  At any rate, for the rest of the meal Mr Smart kept wishing there was more cauliflower!
  • Fourth course was spiced lamb shoulder with a thin sweet mint sauce, a delicious smokey freekeh salad and a crunchy fresh baby cos and herb salad.
  • Fifth course, dessert, we split.  Mr Smart had the very hot strong bittersweet Turkish coffee and I had the desserts!  A small square of Turkish delight of average quality, and the Arak poached apricot filled with labne.  The apricot was amazing.  I had kind of been expecting it to be a bit like the marscapone stuffed apricots you can get at Italian delis but this was something else.  I hadn't counted on the Arak, the subtle but noticeable anise flavour made the mouthful completely wonderful and unlike anything I've had before.

It was a fantastic meal and Mr Smart and I noted that their other banquet menu, only available for groups of three or more, has so many different dishes to the banquet we had that it definitely bears further notice with a larger group of people!  Whenever we get there again, Rumi definitely made my favourites list!
After dinner we wended our way back to Mr Smart's for the weekly Game of Thrones viewing!  It was such a cool episode.  It was Varys and Daenerys heavy too, so I was a very happy camper.  Daenerys and her dragons are so badass.  It's a very absorbing show and world.  Mr Smart wanted to get a bit of writing done after that so I got to read my book for a while before bed.  I don't know why, but it always seems easier to devote time to reading when I'm not at home.

Apr 23 - A Sense Of Accomplishment

Ow. Ow. Ow.  My calves hurt.  It was pretty bad yesterday, but worse today!  Apparently doing the thousand steps downhill first has it's disadvantages.  Mr Smart is also in considerable pain but I'm sure we'll both recover gradually.  The biggest problem was that I needed to use the photocopier a lot today, and not just all at once, intermittently throughout the day which meant traipsing up and down half the length of the office with stiff robot legs over and over.  My co-workers were unmerciful in their teasing.
Today was a good day at work.  For the first time in quite a while, I feel like something is 'finished'.  Although the capex accruals are a monthly deadline, it's the sort of thing that once it's right, I know it won't get out of control again.  I reconciled each accrual line back to the base of approved funds and I feel satisfied that I've captured and corrected any anomalies.  It gave me a massive sense of accomplishment and I also got it done a day early which was nice.  Normally they don't like us to do it early but I checked with the powers that be at Head Office and she gave me the okey dokey.
My desk has gotten a little bit neater today and hopefully by clearing off just a few bits of paper every day I will get there in the end.  I doubt much will move for the next couple of days though, capex accruals might be done but the centre accruals are just beginning and they take a hell of a lot longer to process, especially when I'm using them to trouble shoot other issues along the way.  Oh well, I will plug away at things and I will get there in the end.  If I'm not fast enough for anyone else that will just be their tough luck, I do things right but not necessarily fast.

  Today's food was:

  • Breakfast was a toasted English muffin topped with two rashers of short cut bacon and a fried egg, sunny-side down followed by a small ripe banana.
  • Morning snack was a red plum.
  • Lunch was a 300g home-style lamb and barley soup with a toasted English muffin spread with Devondale butter.
  • Dinner was two Mission original wraps, one filled with lettuce, tomato, sour cream, sweet chilli sauce and two sweet chilli chicken tenders and the other filled with lettuce, tomato, Heinz light salad cream and fish fingers.  The chicken and fish fingers were both done in the AirFryer.
  • Dessert was 10g of Lindt 85% Cocoa dark chocolate.

It was a pretty humdrum evening all up.  I paid some bills, one of which was house and contents insurance which always hurts a little but at least I didn't feel ripped off this year.  I switched providers last year and it seems to have worked out well for me.  But enough of that excitement, it's time for me to rest my weary head.  Goodnight everyone.

Apr 22 - Chocolate for Dinner

I had chocolate for dinner, and I'm ok with that.  Before I get to that though, thank you so much to everyone who sent message of love and support following my Apr 20 post.  I will clarify and say that for the most part, I believe I am a person who has intrinsic worth as a human being and that I am as 'good enough' as I need to be just the way I am.  What I was attempting to get across was the sense of paranoia and pure fear that grips me in moments of intense stress and panic.  Apparently I did a good job as I think I have worried a few of you for which I apologise.  Deep down I know I will always be ok because I have people around me who are loving and supportive.

I had a very busy and very long day.  It started with an appointment at the doctor's office to follow up on my vertigo bouts since it's been almost a month now and they are still intermittently occurring.  The doctor checked me over again and my blood pressure and ears both still looked fine.  She ran me through some balance exercises and even with eyes closed I passed.  She is still confident that it is just an inner ear infection, but in order to rule out any of the nastier possibilities she has given me a referral to an ear, nose and throat specialist.
I headed off to work after that and actually made it in by just after 10am which was good.  Today was invoice entry deadline so I knew it would be a busy day.  I also had to work out some internal transfers which took me a little while to get the hang of.  Luckily my office roomie was on hand to field my queries and help me get there.
As the morning and afternoon very quickly vanished, I found myself stuck at the office late.  Slogging away all on my lonesome.  This must be the latest I've ever been there because I got to meet the cleaners this evening.  As an office worker I've learned that being on a first name basis with the night security and night cleaners is a surefire sign that you are there too late too often, but it's also nice to be able to meet and appreciate the people who work behind the scenes to make your space a nicer place by the morning.
I got a 'Hello, how are you?' message from TwoWrongs in the early evening and I whined that I was stuck at work.  We chatted while I plugged away at my invoices and he bemoaned the lack of chocolate at his place.  I had in fact, successfully avoided two forms of chocolate today.  The first, Cadbury Dairy Milk being offered around at morning tea time, and the second, in chocolate mud cake form at afternoon tea.
TwoWrongs had resolved that he would have to make a trip to Koko Black in Carlton to alleviate his chocolate crisis, and since QV is on the way, he suggested I finish up work and come along too.  Why the hell not I thought, beats being stuck here.  And so it was that 45 minutes later I found myself a Koko Black enjoying chocolate for dinner.
It's very easy to stay late at work regularly when there is nothing waiting for you at home (and no, bunny rabbits do not count).  I used to work ridiculously long hours once upon a time not so long ago and it's a habit I've mostly gotten out of.  The challenges of this new role would make it very easy to slip into that habit again so I was very grateful to be rescued tonight.

  Today's food was:

  • Breakfast was an English muffin topped with two rashers of short cut bacon and a fried egg, sunny-side down followed by a small just ripe banana.
  • Morning snack was two dried peach halves.
  • Lunch was a 300g creamy chicken noodle soup with two slices of toasted Bürgen wholemeal and seeds bread spread with Devondale butter and a 250ml nudie Houston juice.
  • Afternoon snack was a green nashi pear, cored and sliced.
  • "Dinner" was a Belgian Spoil and a Belgian hot chocolate at Koko Black in Carlton.  From left to right, the 'Spoil' contains, chocolate ice-cream, a divinely thick chocolate mousse (Captain Cupcake it made me think of you, you HAVE to try it!), two chocolate truffles - Champagne and Cointreau flavours, two perfect Florentines and a small chocolate and walnut brownie.

TwoWrongs dropped me back at QV after we'd enjoyed a dessert each, an hour's spirited conversation, and singing along to Tom Waits' Better Off Without A Wife, and from there I drove home.  It was a late night, especially when I then had to finish yesterday's blog and get this one written, but at least it ended up being a fun night.

Apr 21 - Save Me Captain America!

We arose earlyish and Mr Smart settled on the couch to do some writing while I showered and ate breakfast.  I had a serve of Uncle Toby's creamy honey flavoured oats, topped with a generous spoonful of Dairy Farmer's Thick & Creamy orchard peaches and mango 98% fat free yoghurt and accompanied by a 250ml nudie space chimp juice.  That sounds really unappetising and kind of gross but it's one of my favourite juices.
Mr Smart mentioned Captain America's, an American-styled hamburger joint in Ferntree Gully that we pass on the way to the thousand steps walk.  We've often talked about going as it's somewhere I've enjoyed before, particularly for their onion rings - a snackable that Mr Smart is very fond of, but we've never gotten around to it.  As today was the day for our monthly walk, Mr Smart suggested we go there for lunch afterwards.  Sure it means effectively wiping out the good the walk does us... but it's still a better choice than going to lunch without doing the walk!
We drove to the walk but as we approached the entry to the car park at 10:28am we were greeted by blockades manned by police, and signage stating that the car park would be closed until 10:30am.  Unfortunately there was not really any place to stop and wait for those two minutes so we had to drive on to avoid being rear-ended.  All along the down side of the hill there were parked cars.  Weekly joggers and runners determined to do their normal run regardless of car park closures.  I wonder why none of them thought just to keep driving and start at the top for a change because that's what we did.
We went down the Kokoda trail which is definitely the roughest of the options.  I nearly fell flat on my arse on a slippery step, thank goodness for handrails!  When we got to the bottom we could see that the car park had been closed to allow for the ceremonial opening of the new Kokoda memorial.  We didn't want to approach is as things seemed to still be quite formal, and as Mr Smart said "This is their day" so we left our service men and women in peace and went to start the long walk back up the Lyrebird track with legs already jelly.

Before we got there, on a tree directly above the track there was a cheeky kookaburra.  He was perched with bum stuck out, preparing perhaps, to sully walkers at a moments notice.  We veered to the other side of the track to avoid such a possibility.

The walk up while hellish, was satisfying.  Mr Smart always pauses with me for water or to catch my breath and we can talk once the track incline reduces a little towards the top.  The other great thing about doing the uphill last was knowing that when we got to the top it really was over!  My legs of course don't see it that way and have not functioned fully for the remainder of the day.  According to Mr Smart's runtastic app we did 4.15km, from the car and back, in 1 hour 23 minutes!  Not bad when you consider that's over 400m elevation.

We got back to the car at noon and headed straight off for lunch at Captain America's.  It's a cool kind of place.  There are jokes and puns all over the walls and it's American in a very Aussie way.  It's laid back and likes to laugh at itself and they give their tips to support the CFA which is a nice touch given that they are situated in a relatively bushfire prone area.

We were first to arrive for lunch that day so we had our pick of the tables and booths.  We chose a booth by the window so we could watch the world go by.  I ordered a Pineapple Fanta Float (a Spider to Aussies) and I thought their trick of weighting the straw down with a knotted Allen's Snake was pretty clever.  For my lunch I ordered the hot dog.  The menu describes it as "A third of a metre of frankfurt served in a roll topped with onion, bacon, mushrooms, American mustard, and grilled cheese, served with chips"  It was enormous.  It made me laugh that they described it as 'a third of a metre' when the Americans' cling so tenaciously to their imperial measurements.  Surely they should've said 'foot'?

A large group of people celebrating a birthday were next to arrive and among them was a real life loud-mouthed American woman.  She explained that root beer was 'like sarsaparilla only it tastes real good' and then she asked about their chilli sauce.  The waitress described it as 'a bit like sweet chilli sauce but with a kick' so the woman declined and ordered something else instead.  What an American expects from chilli sauce is more like a Tex-Mex version of Sambal Oelek.
I am a pretty tolerant person and I accept 'to each their own' as long as no one's getting hurt, but seriously.. why travel if all you are going to do is seek out the nearest approximation to 'the food back home'?  If you're not willing to get out there and try new things, then perhaps traveling is not for you?  One of the coolest things an American tourist ever told me was that until they traveled they had no idea how small and misguided America really was and what she'd been missing out on.  That's the way to travel, with your heart, eyes and mind open.
After an enjoyable lunch (and Mr Smart agreed that their onion rings are great), we headed back to my place and watched Season 1, Episode 7 of Spartacus.  I'm slowly getting through it!  It can be a teensy bit on the violent side so sometimes I'm slow to watch the next episode, but it's a great show so I know I'll finish it eventually.  With Spartacus watching done for the day, Mr Smart headed home for the day to get ready for the week ahead and I did the same.
I got some laundry brought in and a new load hung out, I made myself another homemade KFC Twister for dinner and had a 26g Curly Wurly bar for dessert, and then I blogged, and blogged and blogged and blogged.  I tried desperately to finish this one too but as it neared 1:00am I knew I needed sleep more than you guys needed another blog.  But it's done now!  So I hope you enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed the day.

Apr 20 - Panic at the Supermarket

It was a lazy Saturday morning for me, I should have been doing laundry and blog writing but instead I browsed the internet until noon then went shopping for dinner ingredients.  I was making a substitute for KFC for dinner for Mr Smart and myself.
I took my time in the supermarket, browsing up and down each aisle and when I got to the aisle where they keep a small assortment of toys I had to laugh.  There on the floor of the aisle were two rubber bearded dragons staring each other off, just like the real ones do.  That's a creative child that's been interrupted at play.

Shortly after that small bit of amusement thought, I found myself having less fun.  I went up and down every aisle, including confectionery.  Chocolate was on special.  I put two 200g Cadbury blocks in my trolley, Turkish Delight and Roasted Almond, and two 450g Cadbury Marvellous Creations Peanut Toffee Cookie blocks.  I walked three paces and froze.  What the hell are you doing? My inner voice screamed.  I stepped back and hurriedly returned them all to the shelf.
After that a mild panic attack started. What is wrong with me? Why can't I do this? I would've sat down and just eaten all of it.  I could picture myself doing it.  Why am I never good enough?  I started to rake myself over coals and fear that I would never deserve good things or be worth anything to anyone.  Now obviously this was not all just about the chocolate.  I have been extrememly stressed with work, probably more than I even realise, and my recent relationship struggles have also weighed heavily on me.  The thought of giving in to temptation may have been the trigger but it certainly wasn't the only cause.
I started fighting back tears and I grabbed for my phone, I just needed to know one thing to get me through it.  Was I worth it?  This wasn't the sort of question you could ask just anyone out of the blue, not without substantial explanation which I was in no frame of mind to be able to give.  I texted Earnest and the response came back promptly, 'Yes, you're worth it'.  Thank heavens for friends who know what you need, when you need it.
I managed to get through the rest of the shop and home and started laying away the groceries.  Mr Smart arrived just as I finished.  He asked me how I was and I started crying again and told him as much as I could remember of what had happened.  I still don't know if I have the order exactly right.  He patiently listened as I told him about my panicked moments and babbled on about work and how I always live in constant fear that I'll never be good enough for me, for him or in any one's eyes.  He cuddled me, wiped away my tears, and slowly said "So... what you're telling me is that you're human?"  I laughed and said "Yeah.. is that ok?" and he said "Yes" and cuddled me some more.  Sometimes I think I really don't deserve him but I'm glad he thinks so.
After getting all that out my mood improved with the relief of a problem shared.  Mr Smart hooked his laptop to the TV and we watched the latest episode of Table Top on youtube, then we watched the pilot episode of the Zombieland TV series.  I think the male lead playing Tallahassee tries way to hard to be Woody Harrelson (who playing him in the excellent movie which spawned the series).  Hopefully he'll settle into it a bit more in subsequent episodes.  Mr Smart likes to give everything halfway decent at least three episodes before he passes judgement but in that respect he's more forgiving than me.
It was about dinner time by then so I set about making us homemade KFC Twisters.  I used Mission original wraps, Chickadee sweet chilli chicken tenders, Bulla light sour cream, Ayam sweet chilli sauce, Symphony lettuce and fresh tomatoes.  They were really yummy!  With dinner done we watched a movie while Mr Smart got a little more study done.  We watched Lost in Translation, a movie I'd been wanting to see pretty much since it came out in 2003 and it was a lovely film, I really enjoyed it.  There were no bad guys.

  Saturday's food was:

  • Late lunch was half a chia roll topped with two slices of Bega So Light tasty cheese grilled in the toaster oven, a small unripeish banana and a 35g Carman's dark choc, blueberry and almond bar.
  • Dinner was two homemade KFC Twisters, two glasses of Stones Ginger Wine with Schweppes diet lemonade, and a 40g Cadbury Dark Bubbly bar (shoosh, it's far far better a quantity than four whole solid blocks of chocolate!).

Mr Smart and I headed to bed relatively early.  We needed to prepare ourselves for tomorrow's big walk!

Apr 19 - Movie Night!

I had another damned meeting on Friday morning.  I got through it ok, I made sense at least and managed to explain some of the issues I was having with the reconciliation to essentially non-financial people.  The upside is that I made a new friend!  One of our on site car park managers, a lovely German-Aussie whom I shall call Haribo after my very favourite German sweet, the Gummibärchen which Dad used to bring us kids back from Germany when he went on business (that was before you could get Haribo here).
Haribo and I stayed back after the meeting to examine the finance problems in more detail than had been appropriate in the meeting.  After we had sorted that out my curiosity got the better of me and I asked him about his accent and travels.  I discovered he was German and proud of it and that he is also interested in photography but like me, finds it difficult to get out there on his own to take photos.  He was clearly very passionate about it and I suggested we should go on a photo taking expedition one day.  I find that the company of others begats creativity in that respect.  He thought that sounded good so we'll see what comes of it.  I'm sure my photography would benefit from it!
I spent the rest of the morning dealing with outstanding utility bills.  Energy companies can be so very tiresome.  I enjoyed my cupcake for morning tea and although I had a soup ready to go in the fridge, I decided instead to use one of my coupons and have Mad Mex for lunch with Bella, one of my coworkers.  I've been feeling a bit isolated from everyone in that long narrow office so it was really lovely to sit down outside of the office and have a good natter.  I've known Bella for a few years as we've both been within the company for a long time so it was easy to chat and enjoy each other's company.
In the late stages of the afternoon, the Friday night drinkies horn was sounded and we all congregated around Paris' desk for Sav Blanc, chippies and the week's quizzes.  Our regular quizmaster was called away to a maintenance emergency so I got to ask the questions on two of them!  It's good fun and leads to a lot of laughs.
I headed home after that and a couple of hours later I was joined by TwoWrongs for movie night!  We grabbed food from the Kebab Joint, cranked up my heater to stave off the cold and flicked on Kronk's New Groove, the direct to DVD sequel to one of our mutually favourite Disney movies, The Emperor's New Groove.  It was most definitely a direct to DVD film, but it had all the original voice actors and it was funny and had a funky soundtrack.  It was a worthwhile watch for Disney fans.
Our second pick for the night was Undercover Brother.  It was a relatively funny if a little cringeworthy, parody blaxsploitation film in which 'The Brotherhood', an all black secret agency, fights to triumph over an evil all white corporation run by super-villain 'The Man'.  It definitely poked fun at itself and at the whole genre.  Chris Kattan as 'Mr Feather' was particularly amusing as an evil henchman struggling to hold back his inner-black-guy.

  Friday's food was:

  • Two slices of toasted Bürgen wholemeal and seeds bread spread with butter and topped with sliced tomato.
  • Morning snack was a delicious vanilla cupcake with vanilla buttercream frosting from The Cupcake Queens in Williamstown courtesy of my lovely predecessor.
  • Lunch was carnitas quesedillas with pico di gallo, sour cream and salsa dipping sauces from Mad Mex.
  • Afternoon snack was a green nashi pear.
  • Friday night drinkies was a small glass of Sauvignon Blanc, not my cup of tea as it turns out, and some plain and salt n vinegar chips.
  • Dinner was Iskender from the Kebab Joint.  It is described as: Traditional style lamb, served on pita bread with a homemade Iskender (garlic, yoghurt and melted butter sauce) and a tomato sauce.  This is not something I will be ordering again.  It was not as good as their kebabs and was basically just a tub of doner lamb (the same one that goes in the kebabs) with tomato paste from a jar, the normal garlic sauce and melted butter.  Edible, but not good.
  • Dessert was a 250ml Tamek sour cherry nectar and a small piece of homemade Turkish Delight.  This was good.  It was sort of like traditional rose Turkish Delight wrapped in homemade coconut marshmallow!

Two movies makes for a late night so it was goodbyes said and off to bed with no blogs written yet again, but it was another good evening spent in good company.  I've been pretty fortunate with that this week, a fact for which I am truly grateful.
